West Atrium
In the fall of 2019, the Albuquerque Museum’s curatorial team worked together to update the sculpture garden and identify the ways in which the featured artworks are in conversation with one another. The sculptures at the beginning of this tour, in the West Atrium and Lobby of the Museum, provide an introduction to the subjects artists engage with throughout the grounds. These works also introduce many of the materials and approaches to making art that you will find throughout.
Luis Jiménez explores the land, culture, and history of the Southwest while also experimenting with materials and movement in his work. Comparing Jiménez’s Progress I and his Venus Figure, for example, reveals a profound understanding of the history of art as well as his willingness to challenge the expectations of what kind of sculpture an artist can make. Irland’s installation reflects on the importance of water in our region while Federico Armijo turns to the intersections of different cultures in New Mexico. In each of these works, the figure, abstract versus naturalistic forms, and a diversity of materials including fiberglass, steel, stone, and bronze provide an excellent overview of the kinds of stories and visual experiences you will find along this journey through the sculpture garden.
