East Atrium
In the East Atrium and Patio, artists continue the conversation of art history and how it informs the creation of sculpture. The still life, a staged setting of everyday objects, is most commonly found in the practice of painting. Here Paul Suttman creates a three dimensional sculptural work that not only challenges the idea of the still life but also engages with modern and classical narratives. Arlo Namingha’s work incorporates Hopi figures that have a spiritual meaning but also have an art historical significance. Namingha and Ron Cooper bring together abstract shapes and the figure to reflect on different subjects, yet geometric forms and the interconnectedness of humans are present in both. Greg Reiche introduces a different material, glass, that reflects the passage of time and changing skies throughout the day. Jesús Moroles’s granite sculpture is also a marvel as this unforgiving material poses specific challenges to the artist in the process of working the stone.
