Summer of Nonviolence Kickoff Celebration!

You’re invited to help kickoff the Summer of Nonviolence on June 1 at Pat Hurley Park
May 31, 2024

On Saturday, June 1, the City of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County will be kicking off the inaugural Summer of Nonviolence campaign at Pat Hurley Park (Upper Loop) from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Sound will be available for media at 11:30 a.m.

“Our young people are the future of our city, and we believe they deserve more ways to enjoy a fun and safe summer,” says Mayor Tim Keller. “Violence has no place in Albuquerque, and I’m grateful to youth who are stepping up and pledging peace for the good of our community.”

The summer-long initiative encourages youth to take a pledge of nonviolence and offers a series of events throughout the season for young people to have fun and stay safe. The kickoff event will feature free t-shirts for youth who take the pledge, food trucks providing complimentary meals, and a ceremony in remembrance of victims of gun violence led by the New Mexico Crusaders.

From June 1 through September 22, the City and County will be hosting numerous events throughout Bernalillo County as part of the series, providing safe havens for youth. These events encompass a variety of activities, from sports to library programs, outdoor movie screenings, and educational workshops. The Summer of Nonviolence’s goal is to foster peace and community cohesion for youth and families.

"The Summer of Nonviolence is about providing meaningful activities that engage and protect our youth, says Bernalillo County Sheriff, John Allen. “This initiative reflects our commitment to community safety and the positive development of our young people. I am proud to support this effort and encourage everyone to participate in these valuable programs."

“The county has a wealth of fun, safe activities to offer our youth throughout the summer. We encourage young people and their parents to explore the variety of options available through this great partnership,” says Bernalillo County Manager, Julie Morgas Baca.

We invite all youth to join us in taking the pledge for a summer of nonviolence online. Volunteer opportunities are also available for those interested.
