Housing Discrimination
Fair Housing is a right protected by the Albuquerque Human Rights Ordinance. Fair housing means you may freely choose a place to live without regard to your:
- Race
- Color
- National origin
- Ancestry
- Religion
- Sex
- Physical Handicap
- Source of Income
Fair housing protects your right to housing choice to include most:
- Rental opportunities
- Home buying opportunities
- Advertising of housing
It is also unlawful to:
- Threaten,
- Intimidate, or
- Interfere with
any person's right to fair housing.
Common Examples of Discrimination in Housing:
- On the telephone, I was encouraged by the landlord to come and see a vacant apartment. When I arrived the landlord saw that I was Black and informed me that there was no longer a vacancy.
- At my apartment complex, I have noticed that the landlord only runs a criminal background check on applicants who are Hispanic and Native American.
- I have a mobility impairment and my apartment complex refused to assign me an accessible parking space close to my door.
- The landlord informed me they do not accept vouchers.
