From still life images to scientific depictions to abstract or surreal interpretations, artists have approached botanical materials as subjects in diverse ways.

On view at Albuquerque Museum September 3, 2022–March 19, 2023. "New Mexico Landscapes" is an exhibition of works that reflect a sense of place that is sometimes beautiful and sometimes a site of violent histories. These works on paper from the Museum's permanent collection encapsulate a variety of artistic approaches to depicting the land, including realistic representations, abstract compositions, imaginative interpretations, and an acknowledgment of history shaped by layers of colonization.

Coming to Albuquerque Museum October 2022. Contemporary interpretations of New Mexico landscapes incorporate the figure, reflect on human interactions with the natural world, and center ideas around power, ownership, and access to land.

Coming to Albuquerque Museum October 2022. Shi Guorui’s exhibition "Ab/Sense-Pre/Sense" at Albuquerque Museum presents spectacular landscape photographs up to 15-feet wide, created using giant camera obscuras, that pay homage to the landscapes and legacy of Thomas Cole (1801-1848), the artist known for launching America’s first major art and landscape movement, now known as the Hudson River School of painting.

Coming to Albuquerque Museum October 2022. Kiki Smith’s solo exhibition "From the Creek," on view at Albuquerque Museum features works that take inspiration from the natural world of the Catskills in New York, the same area that inspired nineteenth-century painter, Thomas Cole. The exhibition presents an immersive experience within Smith’s contemplation of the flora and fauna of Catskill Creek and includes sculptures, works on paper, and tapestries.

An exhibition exploring the work of an internationally known and celebrated photographer of the Civil Rights Movement, the Chicago Outlaw Motorcycle Club, and the Texas prison system.

Three exhibitions from the Thomas Cole National Historic Site in New York feature works by Thomas Cole, Kiki Smith, and Shi Guorui, engaging with the Hudson River area in New York. In addition, Albuquerque Museum presents an exhibition of works by Nicola López and Paula Wilson reflecting on human interactions in New Mexico’s desert landscapes.

One of the first professional Native American photographers captured heartfelt portraits, stunning landscapes, and important events fostering an Indigenous view of New Mexico.
