About the Air Quality Index

The Daily Air Quality Update is based on the Air Quality Index (AQI), which is the EPA’s tool for reporting air quality. The AQI tells you how clean or polluted the air is with six color-coded categories to indicate the level of concern. The EPA calculates the AQI for five major air pollutants regulated by the Clean Air Act. EPA sets a national ambient air quality standard to protect public health for each of these pollutants:

  • Ground-level Ozone (O3)
  • Particle Pollution – Also known as Particulate Matter, including Coarse PM (PM10) and Fine PM (PM2.5)
  • Carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Sulfur dioxide (SO2)
  • Nitrogen dioxide (NO2)
