Fire Marshal's Office

The Mission of the Albuquerque Fire Department’s Fire Marshal’s Office is to protect the lives and property of Albuquerque residents and visitors with proactive fire inspections and public education programs.

The Fire Marshal's Office is responsible for the enforcement of the City of Albuquerque Fire Code (Ordinance 0-2017-020), which adopts the International Fire Code, 2015 edition and the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code 2015 edition with some local amendments. The City's Fire Code prescribes regulations consistent with nationally recognized good practices for the safeguarding to a reasonable degree life and property from the hazard of fire, explosion and other conditions, which may pose a hazard to life and property in the use or occupancy of buildings or premises.

Inspections

The Albuquerque Fire Department Fire Marshal's Office has jurisdiction to inspect (for fire and life safety violations) all commercial buildings and multi-family dwellings within the city's jurisdiction. Fire inspections of buildings and premises can be divided into new construction and existing buildings.

New Construction

Plans for all proposed new building construction or the remodeling of any building, structure, premise and all construction requiring a permit shall be submitted to the Planning Department of the City of Albuquerque and the Fire Marshal's Office Plans Review Section for review and approval.

If you require an inspection for new construction or an acceptance test for newly installed fire protection system (i.e. fire alarm or suppression system) or have any question concerning new construction please call our Plan Review Division at (505) 924-3611.

Existing Buildings

Generally, existing buildings and premises housing businesses requiring a fire permit to operate or have fire protections systems installed are mandated an annual fire inspection.

If you would like to schedule an annual fire inspection for an existing business or building or have any questions, please contact the Fire Marshal's Office at (505) 764-6300 to make an appointment.

Public Education Programs

Fire prevention and safety is a team effort between you and the Albuquerque Fire Marshal's Office. We offer education programs to teach fire safety and prevention to children, seniors and local businesses in our community.

Fire Safety Awareness Training

Fire Prevention and Safety education programs are offered to elementary school age students. These programs are offered all year long but usually targeted in the Month of October during National Fire Prevention Week. In 2009, the Fire Marshal's Office educated over 5,000 elementary school children in fire safety and prevention.

This NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) website, http://www.sparky.org/games, is a good resource for teaching children fire safety.

Fire Extinguisher Training

Our portable fire extinguisher training program is offered to all businesses large or small. This program includes learning can learn the basic types of extinguishers, their components and when and how to use the fire extinguisher.

Once the classroom portion of the program is completed, there is an opportunity for the class to use portable fire extinguishers in a practical exercise. This exercise includes picking the correct type of extinguisher, direction of approach, and the application of the extinguishing agent on the fire.

*Class sizes are limited to 20 people.

If you wish to schedule a fire safety presentation or portable fire extinguisher training, please call (505) 764-6300. Appointments are scheduled in the order received and a two week notice is appreciated.
