Farewell and Happy Trails to Matadi

In late June, we welcomed a new baby gorilla to our family group of western lowland gorillas. However, we also said Bon Voyage to Matadi, our 42-year-old female gorilla, as she is joining a senior troop of gorillas at Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, Kansas.

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums Gorilla Species Survival Plan (SSP) works with our animal caregivers to ensure that these critically endangered animals find the right social dynamic that encourages their health and well-being. At her new home, Matadi will be reunited with her half-sister, 45-year-old Kivu, and a 31-year-old male, Matumaini.

"We want Matadi’s golden years to be filled with health and happiness, and being reunited with Kivu is a promising way to ensure that happens," said Amber Alink, ABQ BioPark Primate and Elephant Curator.

Sedgwick County Zoo also cares for a bachelor and family troop of gorillas in their multi-species Downing Gorilla Forest.

"So far, Matadi is settling into her new home beautifully, said Danielle Decker, Zoological Manager for primates at Sedgwick County Zoo. “Our care team has enjoyed getting to know her and we’re excited to introduce her to her new troop.”
