NM Pre-K is a state-funded program to provide free, voluntary, developmentally appropriate opportunities for children ages 3 to 5. The linguistically and culturally appropriate curriculum is play-based, guided by the NM Early Learning Guidelines, and focused on the following:
- Appropriate behavior, social skills, and being a part of a group
- Art, music, and movement
- Coordination
- Counting
- Hygiene, health, and well-being
- Independence
- Language
- Listening
- Problem-solving, thinking, and perseverance
- Reading and writing
- Science
- Shapes
- Sorting and measuring.
The City of Albuquerque has been a NM Pre-K grantee since 2005.
School readiness, growth, and learning continue in preschool and NM Pre-K. The free or low-cost programs offer:
- High quality care and education
- A safe learning environment
- Child-centered learning
- Developmentally appropriate curricula
- Early literacy
- School readiness
- Full day programs
- Breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack
