What do you give a four-year-old elephant for her birthday? Watermelon-hay cake with green pea decorations! Celebrate Daizy and the rest of the Asian elephant herd at Elephant Conservation Day on Saturday, August 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the ABQ BioPark Zoo.
As event sponsor, SUBWAY® restaurants are providing fruit and hay “cakes” for the pachyderms and cookies for the humans! Watch the elephants search for birthday treats and enjoy hands-on discovery stations, training demonstrations, keeper Q&A, music from The Anslovers and more. Girl Scouts can earn a special Daizy Patch at the event. The party takes place at the Elephant Watering Hole.
“We’ve all been really focused on preparing for the new elephant calf that’s due to arrive any day now,” said Rhonda Saiers, Elephant Manager. “Daizy has definitely been part of those preparations, and we’re excited to celebrate her birthday with all the guests who come Saturday to learn about elephants and how our actions matter for ensuring their future around the world.”
Zookeepers are hopeful that Daizy will have a new sister soon; her mother, Rozie, is due sometime between August and November. Birth Watch has started, and zookeepers are visually monitoring the expectant elephant 24/7 with help from BioPark volunteers and checking progesterone levels daily with help from TriCore Reference Laboratories. When progesterone levels drop to baseline and stay, Rozie will give birth soon after. For more information, email firstname.lastname@example.org or dial 311 locally (505-768-2000).
