Councilor Don Harris has been a resident of Albuquerque for twenty years. Before becoming a City Councilor, Don was a New Mexico Assistant Attorney General for several years. He then continued his career as an Assistant City Attorney for approximately two years with the City of Albuquerque repre¬senting the Albuquerque Police Department. During this time, he worked with the Safe City Strike Force. He is currently a lawyer in private practice.
He enjoys jazz saxophone which he studied from Jackie McLean before going to the University of Connecticut School of Law. He sometimes plays in local clubs or in his church.
Improving the lives of children has been important and will continue to be important in his professional and personal life. Councilor Harris has focused his attention on the need for foster parents and the adoption of children with special needs. He is the father of four children.
Councilor Harris is in his second term. He is currently serving as Council President, and has been the Chairman of the Finance Committee and Chairman of the Budget Committee.
Aims
- Revitalize and beautify East Central.
- Develop a "High-Tech Corridor" which would expand on the already existing Sandia Science and Technology Park and Kirtland Air Force Base.
- Rejuvenate business in the area by improving mass transit.
- Attract more businesses by offering incentives to help nurture the growth of new businesses.
- Alleviate traffic concerns south of Central by commissioning a comprehensive traffic plan.
- Reduce neighborhood crime.
- Make the area more inviting for families.
Roller Skate City is More Than Just a Roller Rink
Councilor Don Harris is pleased to announce to Albuquerque's roller-skating fans that Roller Skate City will open November 6th, 2009. Roller Skate City will be taking over where Roller King left off and with a completely renovated building. New fixtures at the recently renovated roller rink include a brand new skating surface, state of the art sound system and light show, video game arcade, and a skating retail shop. Other cosmetic improvements include new wall carpet, fluorescent black light floor carpet, ceramic tile, completely updated bathrooms and beautiful new custom rental skates.
Rescue Unit for Station 8
City Councilors Don Harris and Rey Garduño have introduced a bill that would fund a rescue unit for Fire Station 8, located in the Foothills. The bill, which will come before the Council at its Sept. 9 meeting, would allocate $380,000 from the photo enforcement fund to establish the rescue unit.
Councilor Harris Introducing Bill to Clean-up Tijeras Arroyo
City Councilor Don Harris is proposing legislation that would call for the removal of certain non-native trees and debris from the Tijeras Arroyo open space, another step in beautifying Albuquerque’s oldest, largest arroyo.
